Mary Baker Eddy
Mary Baker Eddy (1821-1910) author, teacher, lecturer and American theologian is most noted for her innovative and inspired ideas regarding health and spirituality which, she named Christian Science. When asked, “How would you define Christian Science?” She answered, “As the law of God, the law of good, interpreting and demonstrating the divine Principle and rule of universal harmony.” (Rud. 1:1)
Mary Baker Eddy was raised on a farm in New England, the youngest of Mark and Abigail Baker’s six children. Although she was unable to attend school due to bouts of sickness, she studied extensively at home, writing and creating verse from a very early age.
A pivotal moment came to Mrs. Eddy in 1866 when she fell upon the ice in Lynn, Massachusetts on the way to a temperance meeting. Her condition was critical and the doctor who attended her didn’t expect her to survive. But as she was lying in bed, asked for her Bible and while reading an account of healing in the New Testament, she found herself suddenly well. She pinpoints this as the time she discovered Christian Science. The next ten years were spent uncovering this Christ Science and listening to God leading her in the language of Spirit.
My affection for Mary Baker Eddy is stirred as I ponder her patient obedience to God, her love for Christ Jesus and her genuine outpouring of Christly love and pure Christianity to all of suffering humanity.
Mrs. Eddy’s seminal book Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures was first published in 1875. Four years later she founded The First Church of Christ, Scientist in Boston Massachusetts and in 1908, at the age of 87 she founded and launched the Christian Science Monitor, which has been the recipient of seven Pulitzer Prizes.
Since Mrs. Eddy’s discovery, thousands of authenticated cases of healing have been substantiated using this system of Christian Science.
