                                                                        The Majesty of Christian Science

Several years ago an article appeared in The Christian Science Journal (6/2006) entitled, “The Majesty of Christian Science and the Imperatives for our time.” The directives mentioned in the article are:
  •  to grow into a fuller understanding of the might and majesty of Christian Science,
  •  to awaken to and nullify the carnal mind's hatred of the Comforter, and
  •  deepen our appreciation of Mrs. Eddy as the Discoverer of the Science of Christ, author of Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, and Founder of the Church that shares this healing truth with humanity.
There’s a great deal to unpack in these few statements but for the purpose of my blog let’s focus on the first charge - to grow into a fuller understanding of the might and majesty of Christian Science.

Mary Baker Eddy uses the word majesty several times in the Christian Science textbook and numerous times in her other writings. She encourages us in MY 188: 25-26, “ As you work, the ages win, for the majesty of Christian Science teaches us the majesty of man.” When we dive deeper into the word from the Hebrew hadar & geuwth where the Psalmist writes “The voice of the Lord is powerful, the voice of the Lord is full of majesty.” Ps 29:4. The meaning expands to splendor, magnificent, honor, exaltation and excellence. This is not a prideful, haughty or a show of pageantry, but rather a bowing before or meekness within the all-power of divinity. The Greek word for majesty used in the New Testament is megalosyne found in 2 Peter 1:16 ‘eyewitnesses of his majesty’ speaks of the visible splendor of divine majesty as it appeared in the transfiguration of Christ.

I love to stir up my thought, gratitude and appreciation for the might and majesty of Christian Science. Sometimes as new students or life-long devotees of the Christ Science we may be faced  with a protracted  healing, a sense of limitation in supply, opportunity  or creativity. This is when we need to dive deeper into our understanding of the Allness of God, good and the accessibility, reliability and potency of the Christ Truth right here and right now. Mrs. Eddy in her message to The First Church of CS in 1900 she writes, “Not madness but might and majesty attend every footstep of Christian Science.” So on her directive I intend to enjoy this majestic journey! Won't you join me?

Immunity

During a recent visit to my daughter’s home, we found ourselves watching a popular reality game show series called “Survivor”.  Here’s a brief overview for those unfamiliar with the show.  Competing teams of players are placed at remote locations like an island in Malaysia or the Outback in Australia. Several challenges are structured in the competition, anywhere from finding food, a quest for fire, seeking buried treasure, etc.  The winning team of a challenge is rewarded with food, needed supplies or the coveted prize of immunity. In the context of the program, immunity is valuable for the winning team; they are free from losing members due to  poor performance or just being out of alliance and having difficulties with other  teammates during the challenge.

The word immunity caught my attention, as I recalled   Mrs. Eddy’s statement in Miscellaneous Writings where she writes,  “Christ’s appearing in a fuller sense . . . that  calms man’s  fears, bears his burdens, beckons him onto Truth and Love and the sweet immunity these bring from sin, sickness and death.” (pg320)

Webster’s 1828 Dictionary defines immunity as ” incapable of being affected or influenced by a disease; having  special protection; not susceptible or responsive; resistant.  In law, immunity is an extremely powerful position to take or be granted; it means that one is free from punishment, harm or loss.

The moment I take a stand for the allness of God, knowing there is no life in matter, and Spirit is ever-present,  I‘m able to be a witness and experience the Christ Truth as Jesus  demonstrated throughout his ministry. In John 2:19 our Master declares to his fellow Jews, “Destroy this temple and in three days I will raise it up.” Mrs. Eddy reminds us that “I” is Mind, and “he did this for tired humanity’s reassurance.”(S&H 494:3).  Christ Jesus was not subject to the carnal mind, mortal beliefs,  nor or we. We have the right to claim immunity now!

I was able to prove my safety recently when I  failed to lock up my belongings in a very public and busy place, a community swimming pool.  Distracted,  I left my purse, wallet, keys and phone in an unlocked locker and off I went!   After my session in the pool I returned to the dressing area and  seeing no lock, I  brushed aside quickly any suggestion of loss or theft  and claimed immunity for myself and fellow gym members. We are all receptive to divine Mind and can only express Truth’s, innocence, honesty and integrity. Needless to say I was grateful to find all my belongings undisturbed, and in perfect order in the adjacent locker!

“Ye shall know the truth and Truth will make you free.” (John 8:32). “ And not only yourselves are safe but all whom  your thoughts rest upon are thereby benefited. (My 210:9)
